Security Cameras Not Working in Los Angeles: a Symptom-by-Symptom Fault Guide

Offline cameras, footage that is not there, night video that is a white haze, a phone app that says “device offline” from the road. Each of those has a small set of real causes, and you can narrow most of them yourself before anyone drives out. This page is the order a technician works in, written so you can run the first half of it in five minutes. The short answer

Most dead-camera calls are power, a worn recorder drive, or a network change — and one question tells you which.

Ask whether one camera is down or all of them. All channels lost at the same minute is power — the recorder, the PoE switch, or the circuit — not the cameras. One channel lost is that camera, its cable run, or its switch port. A camera that holds all day and drops after dark is a PoE power budget that runs out when the infrared illuminator turns on. Live view that works on the recorder’s own monitor but says “offline” in the phone app is a network problem, and nothing at the camera end is broken. And live view that is perfect while last week’s footage is missing is usually not a fault at all — it is retention arithmetic, because sixteen cameras on a single 4 TB drive hold about a week.

Five checks before you call anyone

Do these at the recorder, not in the app. The app is one more thing that can be broken, and it hides the two screens that answer most of the question.

  1. Count what is missing. Open the channel list on the recorder’s own monitor. Every channel dark, or one? That single fact eliminates most of the possibilities below.
  2. Read the disk status page. Every recorder has one. You are looking for a drive that is present and Normal. “Uninitialized”, “Error”, an odd capacity, or no drive listed at all is your answer, and no amount of camera troubleshooting will change it.
  3. Check the date and time. A clock that has drifted or reset to the factory date means the footage you find will be filed under the wrong day — and that the recorder probably lost power without shutting down.
  4. Note when it stopped, to the minute. A clean cut-off at the same minute on every channel is a power event. Channels dropping one at a time over days is usually the drive. Cameras that fail at dusk and come back at dawn are a power-budget problem.
  5. Power-cycle once, in order. Shut the recorder down from its own menu if it still responds, then power the PoE switch or injector, wait thirty seconds, then the recorder. One attempt. Repeatedly yanking power on a recorder with a failing drive destroys the recordings you are trying to recover — each unclean shutdown is another chance to corrupt the file system.

If something already happened

Stop troubleshooting and preserve the clip first. Export it to a USB drive and copy it off before you reboot, re-point or replace anything — the recorder is overwriting itself the entire time. A camera is offline: power, distance, and what is in the wall

On a wired system the camera, its data and its power all arrive on one cable, so three things can take it down and only one of them is the camera.

The power budget, not the port count

A switch advertised as “8-port PoE” has a total wattage budget that is usually far less than eight fully loaded ports. The IEEE standards set what each end is entitled to: 802.3af delivers 15.4 W at the switch and 12.95 W at the camera, 802.3at (PoE+) 30 W and 25.5 W, and 802.3bt (PoE++) 60 W and 51 W, rising to 90 W and 71.3 W over all four pairs. The gap between the two figures in each pair is what the cable loses as heat — which is why a long run and a marginal power supply fail together, and why the failure shows up at dusk when illuminators, heaters and pan-tilt motors all wake up at once.

The 100-metre rule is a rule

ANSI/TIA-568 gives you a 100 m channel: up to 90 m of solid horizontal cable plus 10 m of patch cords, with no more than four mated connections. A run somebody describes as “about 300 feet” is already at 91 m before the patch leads, and every coupler spliced in to make it reach costs margin. Cameras at the end of an over-long run behave exactly like intermittent hardware: fine in mild weather, dropping on hot afternoons.

Copper-clad aluminium is the one to look for

ANSI/TIA-568.2-D requires the conductors in category-rated cable to be solid or stranded copper. Copper-clad aluminium — CCA — is sold cheaply, looks identical behind a wall plate, and as Fluke Networks documents, is non-compliant and does not carry a valid safety listing under the National Electrical Code for the CM, CMR or CMP applications building cable is installed in. Aluminium’s higher resistance is precisely the wrong property for carrying power. If cameras started dropping a year or two after a bargain installation, ask what is in the walls: nick the jacket on a spare tail and look at the strands, because silver-grey instead of copper tells you the system will keep failing whatever you replace. Proper structured cabling is testable, and a certification report is the only proof that a run is good.

The mundane causes are worth naming too, because they are common in Los Angeles: water sitting in an outdoor junction box that was never sealed, a corroded plug in a soffit, a switch port that has simply died, and a rodent-chewed run in an attic or crawlspace.

The footage you wanted is gone

Two completely different failures get reported in the same words.

It never recorded

Motion-only recording is the usual culprit — sensitivity set too low, zones drawn around the wrong part of the frame, or a schedule that excluded the hours in question. Motion detection on a camera looking at a street also gets switched down deliberately, because headlights and swaying trees fill the drive, and then it no longer triggers on a person. Recording continuously and using motion only to flag events avoids the whole class of problem, at the cost of storage.

It recorded, and was overwritten

Retention is arithmetic. Western Digital defines a single HD surveillance stream as 3.2 Mbps (1080p, H.265, 25 fps), which recording around the clock is about 34.6 GB per camera per day:

So the sixteen-camera system somebody is unhappy with is not malfunctioning; it is doing exactly what a single 4 TB drive can do. Move to 4K, or to higher bitrates for scenes with a lot of motion, and every figure shrinks. Decide the retention you actually need first — thirty days is the common answer for a business, and some licensed premises are held to ninety by regulation — then size the drives to it and write the number down.

The drive was the wrong drive, or it is worn out

A recorder writes continuously, forever, which is the one workload a desktop drive is not specified for. Surveillance drives are:

Two things follow. First, a desktop drive in a recorder is a scheduled failure, not bad luck. Second, both manufacturers warrant these drives for three years and both derate reliability with heat, so a recorder that has been running since 2019 in a warm closet is on borrowed time even if nothing has failed yet — and the cheapest preventive job on any camera system is replacing the drive before it takes the recordings with it.

Night video is a white haze

This is almost never a failed camera. It is the camera’s own infrared light coming straight back into the lens. Axis’ published guidance names the causes: IR reflecting off a nearby wall, eave or ceiling, and dirt, spider webs, water droplets or snow on a dome reflecting the light back — which produces a foggy image, or a mirror effect inside the dome itself.

  • Spider webs are the single most common cause, and they are invisible by day. A web strung from the sun shield down across the lens is lit brilliantly the moment the illuminators come on. Clean the dome or housing before you do anything else.
  • A dome pushed hard under a soffit lights the soffit. The illumination cone can be wider than the field of view, so a surface you cannot see in the picture may still be filling it with light. Re-aim, or move the camera out on a bracket so the beam clears the wall. Where that is impossible, Axis suggests painting or covering the reflective surface, and some cameras can dim the LEDs nearest a wall.
  • A camera shooting through a window will always fail at night. Glass returns the infrared directly. Either put the camera outside or turn off its illuminators and light the scene some other way.
  • A daytime image that has turned pink or violet is a different fault entirely: the infrared cut filter is no longer switching. That is hardware, and no amount of aiming fixes it.

If night video is dim rather than washed out, the honest answer is usually that the scene has no light and the camera was never specified for it. Getting that right at the design stage is what our placement checklist is for.

Fine at home, dead on your phone

If live view is perfect on the recorder’s monitor and the app says “device offline” from the road, the cameras, the cable and the recorder are all working. What broke is the path from the internet to the recorder, and in Los Angeles it is usually one of these.

  • The internet provider replaced or reset the router. Port forwards, fixed address reservations and firewall rules all live in that box and all vanish with it. This is the most common single cause we see, and it is why a system “stopped working” on a day nobody touched the cameras.
  • You are behind carrier-grade NAT. Check your router’s WAN address: if it begins 100.64 through 100.127, you are sharing one public address with other customers. RFC 6598 reserves 100.64.0.0/10 for exactly that purpose, and the inability to open inbound ports through a carrier NAT is one of the documented consequences. Port forwarding cannot be made to work, and no further hours in the router settings will change it. The real options are the manufacturer’s relay or P2P service, a VPN back to the site, or asking the provider for a routable static address.
  • A new mesh or Wi-Fi system put the recorder on a different subnet, or turned off the UPnP the app was quietly relying on.
  • The app account belongs to the installer. If the system was registered under a company email you do not control, transferring it is an administrative job, not a technical one — and it is one reason to insist on your own admin credentials at handover.

One caution: do not fix remote access by exposing the recorder’s web interface to the internet on a forwarded port. A recorder reachable that way with factory credentials is found by automated scanning within days, and that is how camera systems end up in other people’s hands. The recorder itself

Beeping is information. Continuous beeping is normally a disk alarm or a video-loss alarm, and the recorder’s exception log will say which. Silencing the buzzer without reading the log is how a failing drive becomes a month of missing footage.

Heat kills recorders quietly. WD Purple is specified to 65 °C and Seagate SkyHawk to a 70 °C drive case, but both derate reliability well below those ceilings — WD’s million-hour figure assumes 40 °C. A recorder shut inside a cabinet, sitting on a garage ceiling, or pushed into an attic in the Valley in September is the reason drives die at two years instead of five. Give it ventilation or move it somewhere cooler; it is a cheap change with a long payback.

Power events cost you footage. A recorder that loses power without shutting down can corrupt its file system, and on an older drive that is often the failure that finishes it. A small uninterruptible supply on the recorder and its PoE switch is the least expensive reliability upgrade on the whole system, and it keeps the cameras live through the brownouts and short outages that are normal here. A wrong timestamp ruins good footage

A recorder whose clock has drifted, or reset to a factory date after a power loss, produces recordings filed under the wrong day — and every hour of searching for an incident that is not where it should be starts here. Set the recorder to synchronise with a time server rather than trusting its internal clock, and check that daylight saving is configured, because an hour’s offset in March is enough to make two accounts of the same event disagree. It matters practically: it is the first thing questioned when footage is handed to an adjuster, and it is why we recommend verifying the clock at the same time you check the drive. If you intend to make footage available to police, registering the camera with LAPD or the Sheriff shortens the path considerably.

Repair or replace, in 2026

Repair the parts, replace the architecture. These are worth fixing and usually inexpensive: a drive, a power supply, a PoE switch, a failed connector, one camera on a sound cable plant, or aiming and focus. These are not worth chasing: an analog or 960H system, a proprietary recorder whose maker has abandoned it and whose app no longer works, or any system wired in copper-clad aluminium.

There is also a parts reality specific to this year. FCC Public Notice DA 26-635, released 26 June 2026, prohibits continued importation and marketing of covered equipment including Hikvision and Dahua, and states expressly that it does not affect continued use or operation of equipment already legally purchased. Nothing you own has become illegal. What has changed is supply: replacing a failed camera like-for-like on one of those systems is getting harder, and a partial replacement can leave you with two brands, two apps and a recorder that only fully supports one of them. What a service call involves, and what to have ready

Have these four things to hand and a visit gets shorter: where the recorder physically is; whether you hold the admin password as well as the app login; the date and time it stopped; and what changed around then — a new router, an outage, a remodel, a roof, a tree cut back. Photos of the front and back of the recorder and of the switch save a diagnostic step before anyone arrives.

Why did my security camera suddenly go offline?

Start by asking whether one camera went offline or all of them. If every channel died at the same minute, the fault is power — the recorder, the PoE switch or the circuit — not the cameras. If one camera went and the rest are fine, it is that camera, its cable run or its switch port; moving its cable to a known-good port tells you which in about a minute. A camera that works all day and drops after dark is the classic sign of an exhausted PoE power budget, because the infrared illuminator raises the camera’s draw at dusk. And a camera that is fine on the recorder’s own monitor but shows “offline” in the phone app is not broken at all; that is a network or account problem.

My cameras were recording, but the footage from last week is gone. What happened?

Almost always it was overwritten, and that is arithmetic rather than a fault. Western Digital defines one HD surveillance stream as 3.2 Mbps (1080p, H.265, 25 fps), which is about 34.6 GB per camera per day recording continuously. Sixteen cameras on a single 4 TB drive therefore hold roughly a week, so an incident somebody notices three weeks later is already gone. The other possibility is that it never recorded: motion-only recording with the wrong sensitivity or zones, or a schedule that excluded those hours. Check the recorder’s disk status page and its recording schedule before assuming hardware failure, then decide the retention you actually need and size the drives for it.

Why is my camera’s night vision just a white glare?

The camera’s own infrared light is bouncing back into its lens. Axis’ guidance names the causes: IR reflecting off a nearby wall, eave or ceiling, and dirt, spider webs, water droplets or snow on a dome reflecting the light straight back. Spider webs are the most common and are invisible during the day — they are strung from the sun shield down across the lens and lit brilliantly at night. Clean the dome or housing first. If the camera sits hard under a soffit or shoots through a glass window, no cleaning will fix it; the camera has to be re-aimed or moved so the IR beam stays clear of nearby surfaces. A daytime image that has turned pink or violet is different — that is the infrared cut filter failing, which is a hardware fault.

My cameras work at home but not on my phone when I am out. Why?

Nothing is wrong with the cameras. The most common cause in Los Angeles is that the internet provider replaced or reset the router, which wipes the port forwards and the recorder’s fixed address with it. The second is carrier-grade NAT: if your router’s WAN address begins 100.64 through 100.127, you are sharing a public address with other customers — RFC 6598 reserves 100.64.0.0/10 for exactly that — and port forwarding cannot work no matter how it is configured. The fix is the manufacturer’s relay service, a VPN back to the site, or a static public IP from the provider. Do not solve it by exposing the recorder’s web port to the internet with default credentials; automated scanning finds those within days.

Can you repair security cameras that another company installed?
