Wi-Fi Jammers and Los Angeles Burglary Crews: Why Wireless Cameras Go Dark, and How to Build a System That Keeps Recording

LAPD has warned since March 2024 that organized crews carry Wi-Fi jammers to silence cameras and alarms before they climb to a second-floor balcony. In April 2026 the Chief of Police described the tactic again after nine San Fernando Valley break-ins in ten days, and in May 2026 the Sheriff displayed a crew’s hidden camera and reported a jammer recovered from a burglary. This guide explains what a jammer actually stops, gives you a five-minute test for the system you already own, and lays out the wired design that keeps recording. The short answer

A jammer blinds cameras that talk over the air. Cameras that record over a cable keep working.

A Wi-Fi jammer floods the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with noise so nothing nearby can hold a connection. Every camera, doorbell and alarm hub that depends on Wi-Fi to record or to alert you stops doing both, usually without a sound. A camera wired with Ethernet to a recorder inside the house has no radio link to lose: it keeps recording through the jam, through a cut internet line and, on a battery backup, through a power cut. What LA police have said, 2024 to 2026

This is not a rumor from a neighborhood app. LAPD and the Sheriff’s Department have described the same tactic on the record over two years, and the description has barely changed.

In at least three cases the crews used hidden surveillance cameras and Wi-Fi jammers. The Sheriff displayed a camera hidden in a box wrapped in artificial turf — a phone, a camera and spare batteries — and said three suspects in a May 1 Ventura County burglary were caught with jewelry, cash and a jammer. His advice: hard-wired systems over wireless ones that can be jammed.

Two departments, two years, one recommendation: hard-wire it. The rest of this page is how to do that properly, and how to find out first whether your current system would even notice.

What a jammer does, and what it cannot touch

A jammer is a transmitter that shouts over the frequencies your devices whisper on. Home Wi-Fi lives at 2.4 and 5 GHz; the devices the crews carry cover those bands, and the same class of equipment is sold for cellular and GPS bands as well. Inside its range, every Wi-Fi device loses its link. Nothing is hacked. The camera simply cannot reach the cloud or your phone, and for most consumer cameras the recording happens on the other side of that link. A cloud-only camera stops recording. A doorbell stops recording. An alarm hub that reaches its monitoring center only over Wi-Fi cannot report. Your phone shows nothing, because the notification never left the house.

What a jammer cannot touch is anything that does not use radio. Copper and fiber do not care about RF noise. A PoE camera cabled to a network video recorder keeps recording. Footage already written to a disk stays on the disk. A wired door contact still reports to the panel. A camera with on-board memory keeps writing to it: Google documents that the Nest camera and doorbell models it lists store up to one hour of events on the device when offline and upload them on reconnection — useful evidence, but no alert while the crew is inside.

Two other parts of the pattern matter for design. First, the crews watch before they act: the turf-wrapped camera the Sheriff displayed was placed on a property to learn the residents’ routine. Second, some crews cut the internet drop at the house, which defeats even a wired camera’s alerts. Neither defeats local recording.

The jammer itself is illegal. Federal law prohibits the manufacture, importation, marketing, sale and operation of signal jammers (47 U.S.C. § 302a(b)) and willful interference with authorized radio communications (47 U.S.C. § 333); the FCC states there are no exemptions for use in a business, classroom, residence or vehicle, and that violators face substantial fines, seizure of the equipment and criminal prosecution including imprisonment. That matters after the arrest. It does nothing for you at 2 a.m.

The five-minute test for the cameras you own

You do not need a jammer to find out how your system behaves under one. For anything that depends on Wi-Fi, an unplugged router is a fair stand-in. Do this tonight.

  1. Unplug your router (or switch its Wi-Fi radios off) for ten minutes.
  2. Walk past every camera and the doorbell while it is down. Open a door with a sensor on it.
  3. Plug the router back in and give everything a few minutes to reconnect.
  4. Check four things: did each camera record the walk-by, and when did the recording appear? Did you receive an “offline” notification, and how many minutes after the router went down? Did the alarm panel or app show a communication trouble? Does the recorder timeline show a gap?

One limit: the router test does not simulate cellular jamming. A jammer that covers cellular bands can silence a cellular alarm communicator at the same time it silences Wi-Fi, which is why the design below does not rely on any single path.

The design that keeps recording

The fix is architectural, not a brand. It is the same design commercial sites have used for years, scaled to a house.

  • Cameras on Cat6 with Power over Ethernet, cabled to a network video recorder inside the house. No radio link between the camera and the recording — nothing to jam. This is our default: continuous local recording to an NVR you own, with no mandatory monthly fee to watch your own cameras.
  • The recorder in a locked closet or anchored cabinet, with its own camera pointed at it. A crew that finds the recorder takes it. Make it hard to find and make its removal the last thing it records.
  • Coverage aimed at the crews’ pattern, not at the lawn: second-floor balconies and windows, the side-yard ladder paths, the driveway and the approach from the street where a casing vehicle sits, and the ground-floor doors. Our placement checklist walks through each zone.
  • A UPS on the recorder, the PoE switch and the router. Local recording survives a power cut for hours, not seconds. The power-outage guide covers sizing.
  • The cloud for remote viewing, never as the only copy. Keep the app; stop depending on it.
  • Existing Wi-Fi cameras stay as extra eyes — but do not count them. Most 4–8 camera homes are cabled and finished in one day, and in many Los Angeles houses the attic and eaves make that straightforward. Our upgrade guide explains what can be reused.
  • Look at your own yard. If an object appears that you did not put there — a box in the shrubs, something in the turf — photograph it and call the police; the Sheriff asked residents to report exactly that. Anchor any safe to the floor. Do not post travel plans.

Alarm panels: turn jam detection on

Cameras are half the problem. The alert is the other half, and it depends on the alarm.

Wireless sensors on a single fixed frequency — 319.5, 345 or 433 MHz — can be blocked by the same class of device. Frequency-hopping sensors are much harder to block: PowerG, used by Qolsys and DSC panels, hops across 50 channels between 912 and 918 MHz, 64 times a second, on an encrypted sequence known only to the panel and its sensors. A broadband jammer covering the whole band could still overwhelm it, so treat frequency hopping as better, not immune. Wired contacts on the ground-floor doors and every balcony door remove the radio from the equation entirely.

Then make the panel tell you. On the Qolsys IQ Panel 4, the installation manual lists PowerG RF Jam Detection, Jam Detection (for the 319.5, 345 or 433 MHz card) and Jam Detection Local Alarm — and all three ship disabled by default. Ask whoever installed your panel to enable them and to confirm the event reports to the central station. With local alarm enabled, a jam sets off the siren whether or not any signal gets out.

Finally, the communicator. A panel with both a wired Ethernet path and a cellular path reports on whichever survives. If a crew jams Wi-Fi and cellular but the wired line is up, the report goes out. If they also cut the line, the siren and the jam detection are what you have left — along with cameras that are still recording. We say that plainly because nothing is unjammable at the radio layer; the point of the design is that the evidence and the noise do not depend on radio. Frequently Asked Questions

Can burglars really jam Ring, Nest or other Wi-Fi security cameras?

Yes. Any camera that depends on a Wi-Fi link to record or to notify you stops doing both when that link is jammed, regardless of brand. LAPD described the tactic in a March 2024 community alert, Chief McDonnell described it again in April 2026, and the Sheriff’s Department recovered a jammer from a May 2026 burglary crew. Cameras with on-device memory may keep a short window of footage to upload later, but nothing reaches you while it is happening. Cameras cabled to a recorder inside the house are not affected.

Are Wi-Fi jammers illegal in California?

Yes, under federal law everywhere in the United States. The FCC states that manufacturing, importing, marketing, selling or operating a signal jammer is prohibited (47 U.S.C. § 302a(b)) and that willful interference with authorized radio communications is prohibited (47 U.S.C. § 333), with no exemption for use in a residence, business or vehicle. Penalties include substantial fines, seizure of the device and criminal prosecution. The devices are still sold openly online, which is why design, not the law, is what protects the house.

Do wired PoE security cameras get jammed?

No. A PoE camera sends video over an Ethernet cable to a network video recorder; there is no radio link to interfere with, so recording continues through a jam and through a cut internet line. What a jammer can still affect is the alert: if your only path to the outside is Wi-Fi or cellular and both are jammed, the recorder keeps the footage but cannot tell you in real time. That is why we pair local recording with a UPS and an alarm panel that reports on more than one path and sounds locally on a detected jam.

Will my alarm system know it is being jammed?

Only if that feature exists and is switched on. Many panels can detect abnormal RF noise on their sensor frequencies, but it is often off by default: on the Qolsys IQ Panel 4, the installation manual lists PowerG RF Jam Detection, Jam Detection and Jam Detection Local Alarm, all disabled as shipped. Ask your installer to enable jam detection, enable the local alarm, and confirm the event reports to the central station. Wired door contacts and frequency-hopping PowerG sensors are far harder to defeat than older fixed-frequency 319.5, 345 or 433 MHz sensors.

How do I know if my cameras were jammed during a break-in?

Look at the timeline. A jam shows up as every Wi-Fi device going offline at the same moment and coming back together after the crew leaves, with no motion events in between; a single camera dropping out looks different. Check whether your router logged the outage and whether any camera with on-device memory uploaded clips after reconnection. Give the police the offline and online timestamps — they establish when the crew arrived and left. Report the interference to the FCC through its consumer complaint center as well.

How much does it cost to switch to hardwired cameras in Los Angeles?
