A Power-over-Ethernet camera gets power and network on one cable, records continuously to a recorder you own, and keeps working when the Wi-Fi does not. A battery or Wi-Fi camera trades all of that for a mounting position you could not otherwise reach. Both are legitimate. The mistake is putting a battery camera on the front door — the one view that has to work every time — because running the cable looked like a hassle.

Wire anything whose failure would matter — every entrance, every approach, the driveway, the gate, the register, the stockroom door. Those views have to exist at 3 a.m. with the Wi-Fi down, and only a cable guarantees that. Use wireless where a cable is genuinely impossible or disproportionate: a rental you cannot drill, a detached garage with no conduit, a historic facade, a six-week construction phase. That list is real, and a good installer will tell you when you are on it.
What almost never works is the middle case — a battery camera somewhere important because the cable looked inconvenient. The rest of this page is the measurable reasons why.
Four different things called “wireless”
Most arguments here are really arguments about vocabulary. Four very different products share the word, and they fail in different ways. Before you compare quotes, work out which one is on the page.

Notice what the second row gives away. A plug-in Wi-Fi camera has not removed the wiring problem, it moved it: you now need an outdoor-rated outlet exactly where you wanted the camera, which in most Los Angeles houses is a harder ask than an Ethernet cable.
The wall your camera sits behind
Here is the part nobody says out loud. An outdoor Wi-Fi camera is the only device in the building you deliberately mount on the far side of the thickest wall in the structure, facing away from the router. Every other Wi-Fi device you own is inside with it. The National Institute of Standards and Technology measured how much signal common building materials absorb; every 3 dB below is half the signal power, and 10 dB is a tenth of it.

Read the two columns against each other rather than down the page. The same wall costs roughly two to three times the decibels at 5 GHz that it costs at 2.4 GHz. That is why a camera shows a healthy signal on your phone while you stand next to it and drops out from inside the house: your phone was on the good side of the wall.
It also explains the trade every Wi-Fi camera makes. The band that goes through walls, 2.4 GHz, is the slow, crowded one — in the United States it has only three non-overlapping channels, shared with every neighbour, microwave and Bluetooth device on the block. Plenty of cameras are built for that band only: Ring's published specification for the Stick Up Cam (2nd Gen), a model it has since discontinued, lists 802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz and recommends 2 Mbps of download and upload. Four of those is 8 Mbps of upload crossing the wall, all day.
One Los Angeles specific before anyone quotes you: traditional stucco is applied over galvanised wire or expanded-metal lath, and a conductive mesh whose openings are much smaller than the wavelength behaves like a screen rather than a window — the same principle as the mesh in a microwave door. At 2.4 GHz the wavelength is roughly 12 cm, about five inches; at 5 GHz about six. Lath openings are a fraction of that, which is why we measure signal at the actual camera position rather than guess a number for it.
And newer Wi-Fi does not rescue an outdoor camera. The 6 GHz band that makes Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 fast is served mostly by low-power indoor access points, which the FCC restricts to indoor operation — they are not permitted outdoors. Running outdoors at standard power requires an access point under Automated Frequency Coordination control, limited to the U-NII-5 and U-NII-7 portions of the band. Upgrading the router is not the fix people are sold.
The 0.8 seconds you do not get back
A battery camera is asleep almost all of the time — that is the entire reason its battery lasts. When its passive-infrared sensor trips, the camera has to wake, connect and start writing, and Reolink publishes the number in its own support documentation: the wake-up time for its battery cameras is about 0.8 seconds, and it says a delay of that size is normal. The same article names the SD card's read and write speed as a third thing that can push the start of recording later still.
Eight-tenths of a second is a person clearing a doorway, or a car passing the end of a driveway. It is the difference between a clip that starts on somebody's face and one that starts on their back.
The same documentation contains the constraint that quietly ruins most battery-camera installs. A PIR sensor detects heat crossing its field, so it is far more sensitive to movement across the view than movement straight at it, over about 120 degrees horizontally; Reolink's instruction is to mount the camera so intruders cross the detection zone rather than walk into it. Now think about where people actually put these — at the end of a driveway, aimed straight down it, watching someone approach head-on. That is the orientation the sensor is worst at, which is why the trigger lands late and the clip opens with the visitor already at the door. A PoE camera has no such problem because it never sleeps: motion is a bookmark in a recording that already exists, not the thing that starts one.
Batteries and solar, in arithmetic
Battery life is quoted in months and lived in weeks, because the published figure assumes a quiet camera. Manufacturers say so themselves: the number moves with how often motion fires, how often you open live view, and how cold it gets. Ring's specification for the camera above puts a full recharge at five to ten hours, depending on whether you use a wall outlet or a USB port. That recharge is the hidden cost — not the electricity, the ladder. A camera at gutter height on the back of the house, recharged on a cycle nobody planned, becomes a chore that gets skipped, and a battery camera flat for three weeks is a decoration.
Solar panels help but are not a power supply. Arlo's own support page is unusually honest about it: its 2-watt panel is designed for year-round trickle charging to keep a charged battery topped up, not to bring a low battery back to full, and heavy use can drain the camera faster than the panel replaces it. Two watts is roughly a third of a phone charger, on a good day, aimed correctly and unshaded — which in practice means a south-facing, unobstructed mount. A north-facing eave in the shade of a neighbour's ficus is a decorative panel.
None of this makes battery cameras bad. It makes them a maintained device. Budget that maintenance the way you would smoke-detector batteries and they are fine where they belong.
What one Ethernet cable actually buys
Power over Ethernet is defined by IEEE 802.3, and the numbers decide what a switch can actually run. 802.3af supplies up to 15.4 W at the port, with 12.95 W guaranteed at the camera; 802.3at raises that to 30 W and 25.5 W; 802.3bt Type 3 delivers 60 W at the port and about 51 W at the device, and Type 4 goes to 90 W and roughly 71 W. A standard Ethernet run is limited to 100 metres, about 328 feet, per cable. What that gets you, in order of how much it matters:
- Continuous recording. Twenty-four hours a day, not motion clips. You can scrub backwards to something nobody flagged at the time.
- No batteries to maintain. Ever.
- Full bit-rate video. Nothing is being compressed harder to survive a weak link, and nothing is competing with a video call for the same air.
- Independence from the internet. The recorder is in the building. If the ISP drops, the cameras keep recording; you lose remote viewing, not footage.
- One thing to back up. Put the recorder and its switch on a UPS and the system rides out a short outage — which also means it cannot be defeated by knocking the Wi-Fi over, a tactic Los Angeles burglary crews have used against wireless cameras.
- No recurring fee. Recording to your own NVR carries no mandatory subscription to watch, search or export your own video — the five-year arithmetic is here.
Where wireless is the right answer
An installer who says wireless is never acceptable is selling, not advising. These are the cases where we specify it ourselves:
- Rentals and leases where the agreement does not permit drilling, or you want to take the system with you.
- Detached structures — a garage, ADU, guest house or shed with no conduit, where trenching a cable costs more than the cameras.
- Temporary coverage — a remodel, a construction phase, an event, a short-term vacancy.
- Facades you cannot touch, including designated historic properties and some HOA and architectural-committee rules.
- One extra angle on a system that is otherwise wired — a side yard, a rear alley — where you accept the trade knowingly.
The right pattern for most Los Angeles properties is not one or the other. It is a wired core covering every entrance and approach, plus one or two wireless cameras filling the awkward corners — hybrid by design rather than hybrid by accident.
Wiring a house that was never wired
The assumption behind most wireless purchases is that running cable in an existing building is a demolition job. Usually it is not. Camera cable is thin, low-voltage and flexible, and most Los Angeles single-family homes have an attic, a crawl space or an accessible soffit to route through: down to eave height at each camera, back to one location for the recorder. Most four-to-eight camera homes are finished in one day. Two-storey slab houses, full masonry and finished condos are genuinely harder, and that is where an honest assessment beats a price list — and where a retrofit over existing coax is often the answer if the building already has old analogue cameras.

Seven questions that make two quotes comparable
- For each camera, is it PoE, plug-in Wi-Fi, or battery? Ask for it camera by camera, in writing. “Wireless” on a proposal is not a specification.
- Does it record continuously, or only on motion? This is the single biggest difference in what you will have six months from now.
- Where does the video live, and for how many days? A recorder you own, or a platform you rent access to.
- For any Wi-Fi camera: which band, and what was measured at the mounting point? Not at the router. At the camera.
- For any battery camera: who recharges it, how often, and from what height? If the answer is “you, on a ladder”, price the ladder.
- What is the switch's total PoE budget in watts, against the sum of the cameras? “24-port PoE switch” is not an answer — the total budget is nearly always well below ports times maximum per port.
- Is the recorder on a UPS, and what happens to recording when the internet drops?

Are wired or wireless security cameras better?
Neither in general — they are better at different jobs. A wired Power-over-Ethernet camera records continuously, needs no batteries, is unaffected by Wi-Fi congestion and keeps recording when the internet drops, so it belongs on every entrance and approach: the views that have to work every time. A wireless camera exists to be installable where a cable is genuinely impossible — a rental you cannot drill, a detached garage with no conduit, a facade you are not allowed to touch. Most Los Angeles properties are best served by a wired core plus one or two wireless cameras in the awkward corners.
Do wireless security cameras need Wi-Fi to work?
Almost always, and that is the part buyers underestimate. “Wire-free” describes the power, not the network: a battery camera still sends every clip over your Wi-Fi, and if the Wi-Fi is down or congested the footage may never leave the camera. The signal problem is worse than people expect because an outdoor camera sits on the far side of an exterior wall, facing away from the router. NIST's measurements put brick at about 6 dB of loss at 2.4 GHz and 15 dB at 5 GHz, and 203 mm concrete at 29 dB and 48 dB. A wired PoE camera has no Wi-Fi dependency at all.
How long do battery security camera batteries actually last?
Published figures assume a quiet camera, and the manufacturers say so: run time falls with how often motion triggers, how often you open live view, and how cold it gets. What is fixed is the recharge — Ring's published specification for the Stick Up Cam (2nd Gen) puts a full charge at five to ten hours depending on whether you use a wall outlet or a USB port. It depends entirely on where the recording is written. A cloud camera sends video out of the building as it happens, so when the connection drops there is usually nothing to send and nothing kept — some models hold a short local buffer, but that is a courtesy, not a design. A wired PoE system writes to an NVR inside the building, so an outage costs you remote viewing, not footage; put the recorder and switch on a UPS and a short power cut costs you nothing either. That same property is why a wired system resists the Wi-Fi jamming used against wireless cameras in Los Angeles burglaries.
