Upgrading an Older Savant System in Los Angeles: What Still Works and What Has to Change

A Savant home installed eight or ten years ago usually still has excellent bones: the wiring, the lighting loads, the racks. What falls behind is the software, the host it runs on, the licence attached to the home, and the screens and remotes people actually touch. This guide shows how to tell which of those you are dealing with, what Savant’s current release requires, and the order an upgrade should happen in. Innov8av is a Savant-authorized integrator, a California C-10 Electrical contractor (CSLB #1043428) and a BSIS Alarm Company Operator (ACO 7755), working in Los Angeles since 2016.

The short answer

Most older Savant systems can be brought current — the host, the licence and the touch devices decide how much has to change

An older Savant system rarely needs to be ripped out. What decides the size of the job is three things that age on separate clocks: the software version (da Vinci, now SavantOS), the host it runs on — and on Mac-based hosts, the Mac and its macOS version — and the licence and Essentials subscription attached to the home. Savant’s SavantOS 11.2 release notes (April 2026) say support for configurations older than SavantOS 10.4 is “extremely limited”, require macOS Sequoia 15.3 or later on Mac hosts, and state that Smart and Mac hosts need a runtime licence plus an active Essentials subscription. Check those three first, then the touchscreens, remotes and wall iPads.

Why Savant systems fall behind: three separate clocks

A Savant home does not age as one unit. The software moves forward release by release. Mac-based hosts are tied to Apple’s macOS support, which ends for older Macs whether or not anything in the house has changed. And since Savant introduced its Essentials subscription with da Vinci 10, the home’s licence and subscription status decides what a dealer can deploy to it. A house can be fine on two of these clocks and stuck on the third — which is why “is my Savant system obsolete?” rarely has a yes-or-no answer.

The usual trigger in Los Angeles is not a breakdown. It is a homeowner who wants something new — a new remote, an added room, Siri control — and finds out the system has to be brought current first. Savant’s own release notes say projects adding new hardware should be upgraded to the latest version beforehand.

Two quick checks narrow it down before anyone visits: in the Savant app, open Settings → About and note the App Version, System Version and System UID; and photograph the label on the host in the rack.

Clock 1: the software version

Savant’s system software was long called da Vinci and is now SavantOS. The newest release notes we could find at the time of writing are for SavantOS 11.2, dated April 2026. Every release publishes matching firmware for remotes, touch panels and audio devices, so the software version also tells you what the rest of the equipment can run.

The big break is da Vinci 10, when Essentials arrived. Savant’s distributor guidance at the time was that homes on da Vinci 9.x or earlier were not eligible for a free trial and had to take a year of Essentials to receive the 10.0 upgrade licence. A system that never made that jump is the one most likely to need real work — not because the equipment failed, but because the path forward runs through a licence step first.

An old configuration is reviewed before it is carried forward. After several owners and dealers, a configuration often holds scenes for rooms that were remodelled and devices that were removed; sometimes it is cleaner to rebuild than to migrate years of patches.

Clock 2: the host

Savant hosts are either built on Apple Macs or manufactured by Savant itself. On a Mac-based host, Apple sets the ceiling. Savant’s 11.x release notes require macOS Sequoia 15.3 or later on Mac hosts, and list Sonoma as not supported for 11.2. Apple’s Sequoia runs on the 2018 Mac mini and newer, so a host built on an older Mac mini cannot follow — no licence purchase changes that. Replacing the host is the fix, and it usually leaves the wiring, lighting, audio and keypads in place.

A Mac host on newer hardware can usually stay, but the macOS update has to be scheduled and done under dealer control, never by accepting an automatic update. Our Savant fault guide explains why an unplanned macOS update is one of the most common reasons a Savant system stops working.

Clock 3: the licence and Essentials

Every Savant host needs a runtime licence to unlock its functions. On top of that sits Savant Essentials, an annual subscription. Savant’s 11.2 notes list Home Backup & Restore, Siri and Apple Shortcuts, and several third-party integrations among the features it enables, and state that Smart and Mac hosts need an active Essentials subscription to operate on current licences. Older “original” licences are treated differently, so what changes when Essentials lapses depends on the licence the home carries.

What matters for a homeowner: Essentials is sold to integrators and distributors who buy directly from Savant, and recurring subscriptions are managed in Savant Central Management. You cannot buy it yourself, so a home whose dealer has disappeared needs a new dealer of record before the subscription can be renewed — the same problem covered on our orphaned system takeover page. Savant’s distributor FAQ also notes that cancelled subscriptions run to the end of the term and that sales are final.

Touchscreens, remotes and wall iPads

These are what the family actually uses, and they age fastest. Savant’s release notes list the first Touch 5 and Touch 8 panels and the REM-1000, REM-1100 and REM-2000 Pro Remotes as no longer actively updated or developed; Savant says new features will require current-generation hardware. They keep working with what they already do. The current Pro Remote is the REM-4000.

For phones and wall iPads, the App Store listing for the Savant app requires iOS or iPadOS 16.6 or later. An iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 4 stopped at iPadOS 15, so it cannot install the current app. Replacing a wall iPad sounds trivial until the new one is a different size from the in-wall mount, so measure before ordering.

The order an upgrade should happen in

  1. Audit. Host model, software version, licence type, Essentials status, every panel and remote model, and the home network.
  2. Back up. Keep a copy of the current configuration before anything changes.
  3. Licence and Essentials. Sort these first; they decide what can be deployed.
  4. Host. Update macOS to a supported Sequoia release, or replace the host if the Mac cannot run it.
  5. SavantOS. Upgrade the software, with matching firmware for remotes, panels and audio.
  6. Devices. Replace unsupported iPads, phones, panels or remotes.
  7. Test and hand over. Every room, scene and schedule, then the versions and credentials in writing.

Doing these out of order is how upgrades go wrong — most often a macOS update applied before the SavantOS version that supports it, or new hardware added to a system that was never upgraded.

Upgrade, rebuild or switch platforms?

Upgrade when the host is on supported hardware and most devices are current. Rebuild the configuration when the system has passed through several dealers and nobody trusts the scenes. Replace the host when the Mac cannot run Sequoia. Switching platforms is the most expensive option: the cable in the walls can usually be reused, but Savant keypads, lighting and power modules and remotes only work with Savant, so most of the equipment is replaced. Our Savant vs Control4 comparison covers that decision.

What it costs

There is no honest flat price for a Savant upgrade, because a software-and-licence update on current hardware and a host replacement with new remotes and iPads are different jobs. We start with a free on-site assessment and give you a written line-item proposal with model numbers, so you can see which of the rows above apply to your home; pay-over-time is available through our PayPal partner. We do not quote a flat price sight-unseen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my old Savant system obsolete?

Usually not as a whole. The wiring, lighting loads, audio and most rack equipment typically stay. What becomes obsolete is narrower: a Mac-based host on a Mac mini older than the 2018 model, which cannot run the macOS Sequoia that SavantOS 11 requires; first-generation Touch panels and REM-1000/1100/2000 Pro Remotes, which Savant no longer actively updates; and wall iPads that cannot run iPadOS 16.6. Software older than SavantOS 10.4 has very limited support and needs a licence step before it can move forward.

Can I upgrade my Savant system myself?

Not the host, licence or software. Savant configurations are deployed by authorized integrators, and the Essentials subscription is sold to integrators and distributors and managed in Savant Central Management. What you can do: note the App Version, System Version and System UID under Settings → About in the Savant app, photograph the host label, and turn off automatic macOS updates on a Mac host so it is not updated out of the supported range.

Do I need a Savant Essentials subscription?

On current licences, Savant’s SavantOS 11.2 release notes say Smart and Mac hosts need both a runtime licence and an active Essentials subscription to operate, and list Home Backup & Restore, Siri and Apple Shortcuts and several third-party integrations as Essentials features. Homes on older original licences are treated differently. It is an annual subscription that a dealer buys and renews for the home.

What macOS does a Savant host need for SavantOS 11?

Savant’s release notes require macOS Sequoia 15.3 or a later Sequoia point release on Mac hosts, and list Ventura and Sonoma as not supported for SavantOS 11.2. Apple’s Sequoia installs on the 2018 Mac mini and later, so a host built on an older Mac mini has to be replaced to run SavantOS 11. Do not let a Savant Mac host update macOS on its own.

My Savant Touch panel or Pro Remote is old. Will it keep working?

Yes, for what it already does. Savant lists the first Touch 5 and Touch 8 panels and the REM-1000, REM-1100 and REM-2000 Pro Remotes as no longer actively updated or developed, and says new features will require current-generation hardware. Replace them when you want those features or a unit fails; the current Pro Remote is the REM-4000.

How much does it cost to upgrade an older Savant system in Los Angeles?

It depends on which parts are behind. A licence and software update on supported hardware is a much smaller job than replacing a host plus remotes and wall iPads. Innov8av gives a free on-site assessment and a written line-item proposal with model numbers, does not quote a flat price sight-unseen, and offers pay-over-time through PayPal.
